This program will begin with talks on the current state and future of lacquer arts and culture in Thailand, Japan and in Asia as a whole. After the seminar, Japanese lacquer artist Sakurako Matsushima and Thai artist Lipikorn Makaew will hold lacquer workshops.

Join us for a special talk on ‘Thai Lacquer Crafts: Perspectives on Modern Life and Design’ by Sumanatsya Voharn, Assistant Professor, Chiang Mai University and ‘Asian Lacquer Crafts: Tradition and Modernity’ by Sakurako Matsushima, lacquer artist, Professor, Utsunomiya University, Japan
WORKSHOP
(Both workshops are happening at the same time, please register for only one workshop)
1) Lai Kam Lanna
Thai Lacquer Technique Lipikorn Makaew, artist, Associate Professor at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna. “Lai Kam Lanna” — gold leaf stencil and engraving technique First lacquer is applied on lacquered surface using a paper pattern, then gold leaf is placed over the surface. Then using the sharp iron tool a design motif is drawn which removes the gold leaf.
In this workshop, 10 participants will practice on the 8 x 8 cm black boards.
2) Maki-e
Japanese Lacquer Technique Sakurako Matsushima, artist, Professor at Utsunomiya University, Japan “Maki-e” — gold and silver powder sprinkle technique This is the traditional Japanese decorative technique of sprinkling gold or silver powder on a lacquered surface.
In this workshop, 10 participants will practice simple maki-e techniques by first creating their own designs and then applying the powder on 3 x 5.5 cm oval pendants.
