Chin Traditional Music and Introduction to Gausem

Discover the history and essence of the music of the Chin Indigenous people. Gausem, a traditional Chin flute, will be the focus of our workshop led by the only living master, Pa. Thang Suan Mang. This workshop is a crucial step in passing down the cultural heritage and preserving the techniques in making and playing the Gausem.

The last part of the workshop gives you the chance to take part in performing the traditional Chinese dance and music of the harvest ritual.

About the artists

About the artists

Thong De

Since 1969, the Karen community has felt marginalized, striving for recognition and equality. They maintain a rich cultural identity with their own language and traditions, including clothing, musical instruments, and proverbs that reflect their relationship with nature. For them, music serves as a non-violent means of resistance.

In 1970, a local teacher dedicated time to studying his ethnic heritage and promoting cultural practices. By 1981, he founded the "Paw Kayaw Ach Phichak" band, inspiring youth to embrace their traditions. Despite facing hardship, he successfully built relationships within the community and established KTG in 2011, advocating against injustice throughout his life.

Pa. Gin Suan Mung

Chin musician, 78 years old, hails from Sakollam Ward in Tedim, Chin State, Myanmar. His journey with the Guasem, a traditional musical instrument, began in 1958 when he was just a young boy. Under the guidance of his elder brothers, he started learning to play the Guasem. These early lessons were not just about mastering an instrument; they were a bonding experience that connected him deeply to his cultural roots and family traditions.

To this day, Pa. Gin Suan Mung continues to both make and play the Guasem. His lifelong dedication to the instrument has made him a respected figure in his community and an important custodian of their musical traditions.

Khup Bawi

Growing up in a musically inclined family in Tedim, Chin State, Khup Bawi developed an early passion for music, inspired by his father, who directed a church choir and composed worship songs.

He began formal piano lessons at the Gitameit Music Center in his late teens, launching his career by performing in local bands and various music events, including the Annual Jazz Music Festival. While classically trained, he discovered a love for jazz and became a professional under a skilled jazz teacher.

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Khup Bawi connected with Chin elders, recognizing the urgent need to preserve traditional Chin music and instruments.

Itö

At 32, Myanmar composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Itö (Win Htut Thawdar) has been a vibrant force in the country’s music scene for 18 years. From his debut rock album “Min Shi Yar” in 2005 to his collaborations across genres, including working with US jazz guitarist David Mooney, Itö transcends cultural boundaries.

He leads the Myanmar Jazz Club, which hosts weekly jazz and blues jams and international festivals. He also co-heads Inappropriate Thoughts, an independent music label promoting alternative sounds. Recently, he established It’z Studio, a non-profit space that supports musicians with rehearsal, recording, and educational opportunities while pursuing his solo projects.

Htet Arkar

Htet Arkar is a Pat Waing musician, and the Managing Director of Arkar Myanmar Company Limited and Artistic Director of HTET ARKAR Myanmar Music and Performances. He founded the LOKAPALA Orchestra in 2022 and the LOKAPALA Ensemble in 2023.

A music instructor since 2018, he has lectured at various institutions and participated in international festivals. Notably, he directed major events like the Golden Jubilee of RIT and held his solo concert, "HTET ARKAR's The Monsoon Hsaing Festival," in July 2023, promoting traditional Myanmar music worldwide.

Passionate about advocacy, she uses her voice to promote feminism, human rights, and environmental conservation while facilitating healing through music.

Khin Poe Bagyi
